Democratic education is an educational tradition which gives children and adults equal opportunity to participate in the making of the children’s developmental experiences. This approach replaces hierarchy, obedience and superimposed curriculum typical of conventional teaching with the freedom of the child, which is the fundamental value of democratic education. Children themselves decide what they want to learn, following their intrinsic motivations and individual interests. The teacher’s task is to propose, inspire and promote the child’s independence. The sense of satisfaction and happiness children get from their freedom correlates with the development of their creativity, self-reliance and responsibility.
